You have a product, service and brand name that you want more people to see. You spend hours each day advertising online, hoping your target audience will see your ads, visit your website and buy from you. In many cases that works well and billions of dollars are exchanged for products, but you are missing a big piece of the marketing puzzle.

When you step back and think about it, even you get away from the computer several times a day. You go places, engage in various activities and see things outside, away from your computer screen. Depending on where you work, there may be signs in the cafeteria or restroom. When you go places, you see signs on top of taxi cabs and gas pumps (I like this one and will tell you more in a minute.)

When you go out to eat, there may be advertising on the tables. Then maybe you and your friends will go watch a game at a sports bar, where there are more advertising signs.

All of those places I mentioned attract what is known as a “captive” audience. I use the word “captive” because you will see the ads for at least a few minutes at a time. One exception would be a moving taxi, but you will see it again on another taxi.

One of the places where you may read signs the longest is when you are getting gas. As you ware waiting for your tank to fill up, you look around to see what else is going on around you. Then your eyes catch an ad on top of the gas pump. You look to see how much gas is going in, then up to the top again to read that sign. It captures your attention and sparks ideas that you will remember.

When you go inside to pay for the gas, you sign the credit card receipt, turn your copy over while you still have the pen and write the domain name you saw on that ad outside. You put the receipt in your pocket and with one more look at the sign as you get in your car, you drive to your destination.

Sometime throughout your day or evening, you reach in your pocket, feel the paper and take it out to see what it is. You turn it over and see the website address on the back. You remember the sign and the ideas you thought of and mention it to your friends who are with you. Then you tell them you saw the ad on top of a gas pump.

Captive audience. Places where people will have an opportunity to look at one thing for an extended period of time. Guys no longer have to stare at a bare wall in the restroom. Women no longer have to stare at a bare stall door either. When you watch the numbers spin on a gas pump, look up to see what other services the station offers, or another ad that may be helpful to you.

I have been installing the gas pump signs for over a year and have seen people literally stare at some of the signs. When they do that, you know it sticks in their mind.

Sounds great, right? The place I install for is AllOver Media. They use advanced technology to create the ads and have a highly skilled graphics arts department. I have been to the corporate office and met many of the staff. All of them are professional and friendly.
